The short answer
An AI receptionist for driving schools built on HighLevel Voice AI costs about $0.24 per answered call, or $76 a month for 320 calls averaging 3 minutes, phone line included. Roughly 112 of those calls (35%) would come outside office hours, which is where an AI answering service earns its keep. Emergencies, complaints and anything needing judgment should go to a person.
What the AI should handle
Quote packages
Explain driver's ed, lesson packages and adult lessons with prices from your list, including what each package counts toward, exactly as written in your knowledge base.
Book and reschedule lessons
Offer open behind-the-wheel slots, confirm the student's permit status and pickup address, and send confirmations to both the student and the parent.
Share class dates
Give the next classroom or online course start dates and enrollment steps, and text the registration link.
Answer road test questions
Explain your road test prep lessons and test-day car policy, and point callers to the state's appointment system for the test, without promising a pass.
What to send to a person
- Accidents or incidents involving a school vehicle
- Complaints about an instructor
- Students with medical conditions or disabilities affecting driving
- Refunds and package transfers
HighLevel's voice agents can transfer a live call, create a task, or trigger a workflow that texts the owner. Set the handoff rules before the agent goes live.
Cost per call and per month
Assumptions for a typical driving school: 320 calls a month answered by the AI, averaging 3 minutes. Phone minutes are billed per call and rounded up, so each call bills 3 phone minutes at $0.01165.
| Setup | AI cost | Phone line | Per month | Per call |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pay per use, Standard voice, GPT-4.1 Mini | $65.28 | $11.18 | $76 | $0.24 |

| Pay per use, speech-to-speech (OpenAI) | $192.00 | $11.18 | $203 | $0.63 |
| AI Employee Unlimited, $97 flat | $97.00 | $11.18 | $108 | $0.34 |

Compared with staff time
Those 320 calls take about 16 hours of talk time a month. At the US median receptionist wage of $18.27 an hour (May 2025, Bureau of Labor Statistics), that talk time alone is worth about $292, before hold time, breaks, benefits and the calls that come in after hours. An AI receptionist does not replace a good front desk; it catches the overflow and the evenings, and frees staff for the people in front of them.
Sample call
AI AGENTThanks for calling the driving school. I'm the virtual assistant. Are you calling about driver's ed, lessons, or an existing booking?
CALLERMy daughter just got her permit and needs lessons. How much are they?

CALLERYes. She's free after school, around 4.
AI AGENTI have Tuesday at 4 or Thursday at 4:30. We can pick her up at home or at school. Which works?
CALLERThursday at 4:30 from the high school.
AI AGENTBooked. What's her name, and which school? I'll send reminders to you and to her, and she'll need to bring her permit.
CALLERAva Chen, Westview High.
Prompt tips
- Tip 1Put each package's price, hours and what it counts toward in a table, and tell the agent to state any state requirement exactly as you wrote it.
- Tip 2List the pickup zones and schools you serve, so the agent does not book a lesson outside your area.
- Tip 3Make the agent confirm permit status on every lesson booking, since a student without a valid permit cannot take a behind-the-wheel lesson.
Rules to watch
State licensing. Driving schools are licensed at the state level. In California the DMV licenses the school owner, the operator and each instructor, and in Texas driver education providers and instructors are licensed through TDLR. The AI should describe only what your approved course includes and never promise a license or a test result.
Texting teens and parents. FCC rules require prior consent for automated texts to mobile phones and written consent for marketing texts. Collect consent from the parent at enrollment for students under 18, keep lesson reminders free of promotions, and honor any opt-out.
