The short answer
GoHighLevel vs Vapi comes down to what you need to run. Vapi is the better fit for development teams that want to choose every provider in the voice stack and control their agents through an API. HighLevel is the better fit for agencies without developers who need an AI receptionist that books into the same calendar and CRM the client already uses for follow-up. Vapi's Pay as you go plan is $0.05/min hosting plus provider costs; HighLevel starts at $97 a month with usage billed on top.
Vapi is a developer platform for voice agents, pitched as voice agents for builders and API-native by design. You choose the transcriber, the language model and the voice provider, and Vapi passes those model costs through at cost on top of its own hosting fee. It lists more than 25 integration partners across model providers, voice vendors and business tools such as Salesforce, HubSpot and Slack, and says its infrastructure is SOC 2, HIPAA and PCI compliant. Vapi does not list a CRM, website builder or email tool; it is the voice layer, and it suits teams with engineering time.

Where Vapi is stronger
Vapi advantages
- Provider costs pass through with no markup, so you pay the Deepgram, OpenAI or ElevenLabs rate the pricing page shows.
- Broad provider choice: models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure, Gemini, Groq and Perplexity, and carriers including Twilio, Telnyx, Vonage or Vapi's free telephony.
- Built-in GoHighLevel tools (Get Contact, Create Contact, Check Availability, Create Event) connect by OAuth for calendar booking.
- Clear support SLAs on the paid packages, up to a 1 hour response for critical issues on Premier.
Where Vapi falls short
- HIPAA is a $2,000 a month add-on, against HighLevel's $297 a month account-wide HIPAA add-on.
- Leaving the model aside, Vapi's hosting plus its cheapest listed transcriber and voice come to about $0.074 a minute, against $0.06 for HighLevel's engine and standard voice.
- Pay as you go includes only 1 phone number and 4 concurrent calls; each extra line costs $10 a month.
- Vapi does not list pipelines, texting campaigns or email, so an agency still needs another system for follow-up.
Where HighLevel is stronger
HighLevel puts CRM, funnels, websites, two-way texting, calling, review requests, courses and an AI phone agent in one login, and agencies can put their own brand on it from the Unlimited plan. The trade-off is a steeper learning curve and usage charges on top of the plan, which our cost calculator adds up. For the full picture read our GoHighLevel review.
Who should pick which
| Choose Vapi | Development teams that want to choose every provider in the voice stack and control their agents through an API. |
|---|---|
| Choose HighLevel | Agencies without developers who need an AI receptionist that books into the same calendar and CRM the client already uses for follow-up. |
Switching
Vapi's GoHighLevel tools use OAuth and cover contact lookup, contact creation, calendar availability and event booking, so a Vapi agent can keep HighLevel as the CRM. Moving the agent itself to HighLevel Voice AI means rewriting the assistant's prompt and tool calls as HighLevel agent actions and routing an LC Phone or Twilio number to it. Custom server tools written for Vapi have to be rebuilt, for example as HighLevel workflows or webhooks.
Verdict
Vapi gives developers the most control of the tools in this group: pick the transcriber, model, voice and carrier, pay provider rates at cost, and add $0.05 a minute for hosting. That control costs engineering time and some steep extras, such as $2,000 a month for HIPAA. HighLevel Voice AI is less configurable but quicker to stand up for a typical small business, and the agent writes straight into the CRM, pipeline and calendar the agency already manages. Pick Vapi for custom voice products built by a technical team; pick HighLevel for client receptionists sold and run by an agency.
