The short answer
An AI receptionist for electricians built on HighLevel Voice AI costs about $0.28 per answered call, or $57 a month for 200 calls averaging 3.5 minutes, phone line included. Roughly 40 of those calls (20%) would come outside office hours, which is where an AI answering service earns its keep. Emergencies, complaints and anything needing judgment should go to a person.
What the AI should handle
Screen for danger first
Asks whether there is smoke, sparking, a burning smell or a hot panel. If so, it tells the caller to call 911 for smoke or fire and to stay away from the outlet or panel, then alerts the electrician.
Qualify EV charger and generator leads
Collects the vehicle or generator size, panel amperage if known and where the charger should go, then books a site visit and sends the photo request by text.
Book troubleshooting visits
For tripping breakers and dead circuits, records which rooms are affected and when it started, then offers the next open service window.
Answer permit questions in general terms
Explains that many jobs need a permit and inspection and that the electrician handles the filing, without promising timelines that the local building department controls.
What to send to a person
- Smoke, sparking or a hot panel: 911 guidance first, then a person right away
- A downed service line or utility-side outage, which goes to the power company
- Commercial and new construction bids
- Code questions a homeowner wants settled before hiring
HighLevel's voice agents can transfer a live call, create a task, or trigger a workflow that texts the owner. Set the handoff rules before the agent goes live.
Cost per call and per month
Assumptions for a typical electrical contractor: 200 calls a month answered by the AI, averaging 3.5 minutes. Phone minutes are billed per call and rounded up, so each call bills 4 phone minutes at $0.01165.
| Setup | AI cost | Phone line | Per month | Per call |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pay per use, Standard voice, GPT-4.1 Mini | $47.60 | $9.32 | $57 | $0.28 |
| Pay per use, ElevenLabs voice, GPT-4.1 Mini | $61.60 | $9.32 | $71 | $0.35 |
| Pay per use, speech-to-speech (OpenAI) | $140.00 | $9.32 | $149 | $0.75 |
| AI Employee Unlimited, $97 flat | $97.00 | $9.32 | $106 | $0.53 |

Compared with staff time
Those 200 calls take about 12 hours of talk time a month. At the US median receptionist wage of $18.27 an hour (May 2025, Bureau of Labor Statistics), that talk time alone is worth about $213, before hold time, breaks, benefits and the calls that come in after hours. An AI receptionist does not replace a good front desk; it catches the overflow and the evenings, and frees staff for the people in front of them.
Sample call
AI AGENTHi, you've reached the electrical service line. I'm the virtual assistant. Before anything else, do you see smoke or sparks, or smell anything burning?
CALLERNo, nothing like that. The kitchen and dining room outlets just stopped working.
AI AGENTOkay. Have you checked the breaker panel for a tripped breaker, or any outlets in the kitchen with a reset button?
CALLERI reset the one by the sink but it clicks right back off.
AI AGENTThat circuit needs a technician to look at it. I can book you tomorrow between 8 and 10 a.m. or between 1 and 3 p.m.
CALLERThe morning works.
AI AGENTYou're booked for 8 to 10 tomorrow. I'll text a confirmation, and the electrician will call when they're on the way. Please leave that outlet alone until then.
Prompt tips
- Tip 1Open every call with the danger question, and put the exact 911 and power company wording in the prompt so the agent never improvises safety advice.
- Tip 2List what the agent needs for an EV charger quote (car model, panel amps, distance from the panel to the parking spot) so leads arrive ready to price.
- Tip 3Tell the agent not to explain wiring fixes or suggest anything beyond resetting a breaker or GFCI, because callers will try whatever it says.
Rules to watch
Licensing and permits in general terms. States, and in some places cities, license electricians and electrical contractors, and many service changes and new circuits need a permit and inspection. The FTC advises homeowners to check a contractor's license with the state or county. Load your license number into the knowledge base and keep the AI from saying any job can skip a permit.
Consent before automated outreach. An AI-voiced reminder call about generator service is an artificial voice call under the FCC's 2024 ruling, so get the customer's prior express consent first, and written consent for anything promotional. HighLevel's outbound Voice AI also requires you to accept its terms and use consent language.
