The short answer
An AI receptionist for garage door companies built on HighLevel Voice AI costs about $0.20 per answered call, or $49 a month for 240 calls averaging 2.5 minutes, phone line included. Roughly 72 of those calls (30%) would come outside office hours, which is where an AI answering service earns its keep. Emergencies, complaints and anything needing judgment should go to a person.
What the AI should handle
Triage stuck doors
Asks whether the door is stuck open or closed, whether a car is trapped and whether a spring looks broken, then books a same-day slot if one is open.
Warn against spring work
Tells callers not to lift a door with a broken spring and not to touch springs or cables, and to keep people and cars clear until the technician arrives.
Check simple opener issues
Asks whether the opener has power and whether anything blocks the safety sensors near the floor, and books a visit if those checks do not fix it.
Book quotes for new doors
Collects the door size, style preferences and whether a new opener is wanted, then books a measure or sends a photo request by text.
What to send to a person
- A door that fell or is hanging by one cable
- Injury or property damage reports
- Warranty claims on doors or openers you installed
- Commercial and roll-up door service
HighLevel's voice agents can transfer a live call, create a task, or trigger a workflow that texts the owner. Set the handoff rules before the agent goes live.
Cost per call and per month
Assumptions for a typical garage door company: 240 calls a month answered by the AI, averaging 2.5 minutes. Phone minutes are billed per call and rounded up, so each call bills 3 phone minutes at $0.01165.
| Setup | AI cost | Phone line | Per month | Per call |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pay per use, Standard voice, GPT-4.1 Mini | $40.80 | $8.39 | $49 | $0.20 |
| Pay per use, ElevenLabs voice, GPT-4.1 Mini | $52.80 | $8.39 | $61 | $0.25 |
| Pay per use, speech-to-speech (OpenAI) | $120.00 | $8.39 | $128 | $0.53 |
| AI Employee Unlimited, $97 flat | $97.00 | $8.39 | $105 | $0.44 |

Compared with staff time
Those 240 calls take about 10 hours of talk time a month. At the US median receptionist wage of $18.27 an hour (May 2025, Bureau of Labor Statistics), that talk time alone is worth about $183, before hold time, breaks, benefits and the calls that come in after hours. An AI receptionist does not replace a good front desk; it catches the overflow and the evenings, and frees staff for the people in front of them.
Sample call
AI AGENTThanks for calling. I'm the automated assistant for the garage door service team. Is your door stuck right now?
CALLERYes. I heard a loud bang last night and now the door won't open. My car's inside.
AI AGENTThat bang is often a broken spring. Please don't try to lift the door or work the springs yourself, because the door is very heavy without them. Is anyone hurt?
CALLERNo, everyone's fine. I just need the car for work.
AI AGENTUnderstood. I have a technician available today between 11 and 1. Would that work?
CALLERYes, please.
AI AGENTYou're booked. What's the address, and is the door single or double width?
CALLER88 Cedar Lane, double.
AI AGENTThank you. I'll text a confirmation, and the technician will call when they're 20 minutes out.
Prompt tips
- Tip 1Write your spring and cable safety warnings word for word, and tell the agent to say them before booking anyone with a stuck door.
- Tip 2Give the agent a short list of safe checks, like confirming the opener has power and the sensors aren't blocked, and forbid every other repair tip.
- Tip 3Mark 'car trapped inside' as a priority reason so those callers get the earliest slot or a transfer to the technician.
Rules to watch
Safety wording on the phone. Garage door springs hold heavy tension, and loose advice by phone can get someone hurt. Keep the AI to fixed safety lines written by your technicians: do not lift or pull a door with a broken spring, do not touch springs or cables, and keep people and vehicles clear.
Consent for reminders and promotions. Tune-up offers are marketing texts and need consent. The FCC's 2024 ruling treats AI-generated voices as artificial voices, so an automated reminder call needs prior express consent and a promotional one needs written consent. Honor opt-outs made in any reasonable way.
