The short answer
An AI receptionist for funeral homes built on HighLevel Voice AI costs about $0.48 per answered call, or $57 a month for 120 calls averaging 6 minutes, phone line included. Roughly 48 of those calls (40%) would come outside office hours, which is where an AI answering service earns its keep. Emergencies, complaints and anything needing judgment should go to a person.
What the AI should handle
Answer price questions
Give accurate prices from your General Price List, Casket Price List and Outer Burial Container Price List without asking callers to identify themselves first, and offer to email the lists.
Take first call details gently
Collect the caller's name and number, the name of the person who died, where they are and whether hospice or a doctor is involved, then transfer to or immediately alert the on-call director.
Share service information
Give service times, locations, directions, visitation hours and livestream details for upcoming services from the knowledge base.
Book pre-planning meetings
Offer pre-need consultation times with a funeral director and send a confirmation, keeping the call short and free of pressure.
What to send to a person
- Every death call, as quickly as possible
- Arrangement decisions and merchandise selection
- Complaints or billing disputes with families
- Distressed callers who want to talk to a person
HighLevel's voice agents can transfer a live call, create a task, or trigger a workflow that texts the owner. Set the handoff rules before the agent goes live.
Cost per call and per month
Assumptions for a typical funeral home: 120 calls a month answered by the AI, averaging 6 minutes. Phone minutes are billed per call and rounded up, so each call bills 6 phone minutes at $0.01165.

| AI Employee Unlimited, $97 flat | $97.00 | $8.39 | $105 | $0.88 |

Compared with staff time
Those 120 calls take about 12 hours of talk time a month. At the US median receptionist wage of $18.27 an hour (May 2025, Bureau of Labor Statistics), that talk time alone is worth about $219, before hold time, breaks, benefits and the calls that come in after hours. An AI receptionist does not replace a good front desk; it catches the overflow and the evenings, and frees staff for the people in front of them.
Sample call
AI AGENTThank you for calling. I'm the funeral home's virtual assistant, and I can connect you with a funeral director at any time. How can I help?
CALLERMy mother just passed at home. Hospice told me to call you.
AI AGENTI'm so sorry for your loss. I'm going to get a funeral director on the line for you now. May I have your name and the best number in case we're disconnected?
CALLERIt's Karen Doyle, this number.
AI AGENTThank you, Karen. And what is the address where your mother is?
CALLER1420 Birch Lane.
AI AGENTThank you. I'm connecting you to the director on call now. Please stay on the line.
CALLEROkay.
Prompt tips
- Tip 1Put the death call rule first: one sentence of sympathy, collect only name, number and location, then transfer or alert the on-call director without delay.
- Tip 2Load all three price lists word for word and tell the agent to answer price questions without asking who is calling, as the Funeral Rule requires.
- Tip 3Choose a calm, slower voice, and forbid upbeat phrases, sales language and any attempt to hurry a caller who is crying.
Rules to watch
FTC Funeral Rule: prices by phone. The Funeral Rule requires funeral providers to give callers who ask about prices accurate information from the General Price List, Casket Price List and Outer Burial Container Price List, and to answer other price questions with readily available information. Callers cannot be required to give their name, address or number first, so the AI must answer price questions directly.
Tone and escalation. Grieving callers should never be pushed through a menu or a sales script. The AI should say it is an assistant, speak slowly, offer a person at any point, and transfer death calls at once. Have staff role-play difficult calls to test it before it answers a real one.
