The short answer
An AI receptionist for pest control companies built on HighLevel Voice AI costs about $0.24 per answered call, or $62 a month for 260 calls averaging 3 minutes, phone line included. Roughly 52 of those calls (20%) would come outside office hours, which is where an AI answering service earns its keep. Emergencies, complaints and anything needing judgment should go to a person.
What the AI should handle
Identify the pest and urgency
Asks what the caller saw, where and how many, and flags stinging insects near entrances or rodents in living spaces for faster scheduling.
Book an initial service
Collects the address, home size and whether pets or children live there, then books the first treatment and texts preparation instructions.
Take reschedule requests
Records the visit the customer wants to move, offers open dates on the route calendar, books the new one and flags the old slot for the office to clear.
Take termite and real estate orders
Records the closing date, the agent's contact details and the property address, then books the inspection and tells the caller when the report will be ready.
What to send to a person
- A reaction to a sting or a health worry about a treatment: the AI tells the caller to contact 911 or poison control, then alerts a person
- Questions about which products were used and re-entry times
- Cancellations and billing disputes
- Commercial accounts such as restaurants and property managers
HighLevel's voice agents can transfer a live call, create a task, or trigger a workflow that texts the owner. Set the handoff rules before the agent goes live.
Cost per call and per month
Assumptions for a typical pest control company: 260 calls a month answered by the AI, averaging 3 minutes. Phone minutes are billed per call and rounded up, so each call bills 3 phone minutes at $0.01165.
| Setup | AI cost | Phone line | Per month | Per call |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pay per use, Standard voice, GPT-4.1 Mini | $53.04 | $9.09 | $62 | $0.24 |
| Pay per use, ElevenLabs voice, GPT-4.1 Mini | $68.64 | $9.09 | $78 | $0.30 |
| Pay per use, speech-to-speech (OpenAI) | $156.00 | $9.09 | $165 | $0.63 |
| AI Employee Unlimited, $97 flat | $97.00 | $9.09 | $106 | $0.41 |

Compared with staff time
Those 260 calls take about 13 hours of talk time a month. At the US median receptionist wage of $18.27 an hour (May 2025, Bureau of Labor Statistics), that talk time alone is worth about $238, before hold time, breaks, benefits and the calls that come in after hours. An AI receptionist does not replace a good front desk; it catches the overflow and the evenings, and frees staff for the people in front of them.
Sample call
AI AGENTThanks for calling. I'm the automated assistant for the pest control office. What kind of pest are you dealing with?
CALLERThere is a wasp nest right above our front door and my son got stung this morning.
AI AGENTI'm sorry. Is he having trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or dizziness?
CALLERNo, just a red bump. He's fine.
AI AGENTGood. If that changes, call 911 right away. For the nest, I can book a technician today between 1 and 5 p.m. Until then, please use a different door if you can.
CALLERToday would be great.
AI AGENTYou're booked. What's the address, and will any pets be outside?
CALLER412 Maple, and our dog stays inside.
AI AGENTThanks. I'll text a confirmation, and the technician will call 30 minutes before arriving.
Prompt tips
- Tip 1Write a short medical screening for sting and exposure calls with fixed 911 and poison control wording, and forbid the agent from giving any other health advice.
- Tip 2List every pest you do and don't treat, including wildlife, so the agent can refer out bats or raccoons instead of booking a visit you can't complete.
- Tip 3Spell out what each plan includes for re-services, so the agent books a free return visit confidently rather than promising one the plan doesn't cover.
Rules to watch
Applicator certification. Federal law requires anyone who applies or supervises restricted use pesticides to be certified, and EPA notes that many states require certification for all commercial pesticide application. Your AI should not name products, suggest do-it-yourself treatments or answer chemical safety questions; those go to a certified technician.
Door-to-door sales and the Cooling-Off Rule. Plenty of pest control companies sell service plans door to door in summer. The FTC's Cooling-Off Rule gives buyers three business days to cancel many sales made at their home. When customers who signed at the door call to cancel, the AI should route the request to a person promptly.
Revoked consent for texts. Keep service-reminder consent and marketing consent as separate fields. FCC rules let consumers revoke consent to robotexts by any reasonable method, so a reply like 'please stop texting me' should end automated messages even when it isn't the exact keyword.
